Global beta ROM 7.5.19 released for Redmi Note 4 MTK

The Global beta ROM 7.5.19 was released a few days late from it's usual weekly update. Global beta 7.5.18 was supposedly cancelled due to unknown reasons.

What's new?

A few new apps, themes and wallpapers were added. Surprisingly the ROM size has trimmed down despite these new additions. There are no official news about what has been excluded from this new ROM.

The new apps are MIUI forums app, WPS office and a chinese app '小米金服安组件'. Fortunately, these 3 apps could be uninstalled if you don't want to use them.

As usual MIUI beta ROMs are released weekly, and this week's Redmi Note 4 MTK beta ROM has some obvious changes.

What's new?

Facebook app is added, homescreen icons have shrunk by 4-5 pixels and looks slightly smaller, a new system app called 'Direct Service' is added. Some of these changes were not on the changelog which is typical of Xiaomi's way.

A new 'Direct Service' app appears on the installed apps list.

Redmi Note 4 - Improve Battery standby consumption

The Redmi Note 4 - Mediatek version is not known for good battery backup despite it's 4100mAh battery. The Mediatek x20 SoC can never beat the Snapdragon 625 SoC in power efficiency. But what we can do is try to conserve battery using some tweaks and settings.

Android Marshmallow introduced a great feature called Doze. Below is a brief description of Doze ( taken from https://developer.android.com).

Doze reduces battery consumption by deferring background CPU and network activity for apps when the device is unused for long periods of time. If a user leaves a device unplugged and stationary for a period of time, with the screen off, the device enters Doze mode. In Doze mode, the system attempts to conserve battery by restricting apps' access to network and CPU-intensive services. It also prevents apps from accessing the network and defers their jobs, syncs, and standard alarms. Periodically, the system exits Doze for a brief time to let apps complete their deferred activities. During this maintenance window, the system runs all pending syncs, jobs, and alarms, and lets apps access the network.

The problem with Doze is it could take 30 minutes or more for it to activate; even longer if you keep moving your phone around without even using it.

The solution is forcing Doze to activate as soon as the screen is turned off. We can do this by installing this wonderful app from Google Play store, called Naptime. But you would need a rooted phone as well. Just install the app and enable it. Voila! Now you have great battery standby time.

You can whitelist apps like Whatsapp, so that messages come through without delay. Goto Settings>Battery>Manage apps battery usage>Choose apps. Choose Whatsapp, and select 'No restrictions'.

Flash Fastboot ROMs in Redmi Note 4 Mediatek

There is a high chance you may have stumbled upon this thread http://en.miui.com/thread-371349-1-1.html on the MIUI forums when you were looking for guide to flash ROMs in fastboot mode.

If you are flashing the more recent ROMs, it will give you an error. The solution to that is don't press the volume down button. Just connect the cable to the phone after you press Download. I'm not sure why Xiaomi developers made that change. But it does make it easier to just plug the cable in without having to press the volume down button.

Redmi Note 4 - Global Developer ( Beta ) version 7.1.5 released

The Global Developer ( Beta ) version 7.1.5 for Redmi Note 4 has been released. Main changes in the changelog is the addition of VoLTE conference video calls and changes in the clock/calculator app. As usual, no information about what bug has been fixed on the Redmi Note 4 or any other Xiaomi devices.

Redmi Note 4 - Global Developer ROM V6.12.29 released

The Global Developer ROM or Global Beta ROM V6.12.29 has been released for the Redmi Note 4 and other Xiaomi devices. The changelog can be found here. As usual the changelog only shows new features added and not existing bug fix for the devices.

Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon version launching soon?

There is speculation that the Redmi Note 4 with a Snapdragon version will be launching soon. This phone with the new Snapdragon 653 SoC will be named Redmi Note 4X according to the rumor. Supposedly, it will come with a 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM setup. Other variants may possibly be revealed during launch.

This is interesting, as there are only 3 phone models with the new Snapdragon 653 on the market now. The Vivo X9 Plus, Oppo R9S Plus and Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro SM-C9000, and all of them are priced from ￥2798 (Chinese Yuan)/USD400 or more.

Since the Redmi Note series is a budget range phone, will Xiaomi price it below USD200(or ￥1390)? We shall see.

Redmi Note 4 - Beta Global Stable V8.1.2.0 are being rolled out randomly

Xiaomi has started to randomly roll out a beta Global Stable V8.1.2.0 ROM for the Redmi Note 4 via OTA (on the air update). Yes, you heard it right, it's a beta Stable.

A mod on the MIUI forums has announced that a public release will follow suit after the random roll out. The new update comes with MIUI version 8.1 which has some new apps added, some new UI changes and functionality. MIUI version 8.1 started rolling out in November to various Xiaomi devices and now Redmi Note 4 gets it with the beta Stable.

*new update (30 Dec 2016): Please avoid updating through OTA. Backup your files and data, and do a fastboot ROM flash using SP Tools. There is some problems with the OTA update.

Redmi Note 4 - Global Developer ROM is here!

Xiaomi has just released the much awaited Global Developer ROM for the Redmi Note 4 a few days ago. Why a developer ROM? Usually developer ROMs will have the latest features and faster bug fixes while the known bugs are still present on the Stable ROM.

If you are on Global Stable 8.0.4.0 currently and want to install the Global Developer ROM, you will need to download the Global Developer recovery ROM. You can download the Recovery ROM from here.

Then copy the file 'miui_HMNote4Global_6.12.15_c1fc91958b_6.0.zip' and place in the root folder of the phone's internal storage.

Open the Updater app, tap on the 3 dots, and select "Choose update package". Goto the ROM zip file, select and press OK. Installation of the Global Developer ROM will start.

Redmi Note 4 - Could not set shortcut link on homescreen

Ever had trouble setting a homescreen shortcut link to a file. Sometimes, when you need quick access to a file like an image, pdf etc, it can be quite handy if there's a shortcut link on your homescreen.

For example, before you can use 'Set to desktop' option in ES File Explorer, you'll need to allow permission for it.

In MIUI 8 homescreen, tap on the Security app icon. Then tap on 'Permissions' and another 'Permissions' option within it. Scroll to ES File Explorer, choose 'Home screen shortcuts' and select 'Accept'.

I don't usually do benchmarks or care much about it actually. As long as it's good and smooth enough for what I need to do with the phone. Sometimes, high benchmarks doesn't translate to good user experience.

Redmi Note 4 - Which ROM to use?

The Redmi Note 4(MTK) doesn't have any custom ROMs except for AICP, which isn't suitable as a daily driver(usage). Since, this phone runs on a Mediatek SoC, users of Redmi Note 4 has no choice but to use only firmwares from the phone manufacturer.

There are 4 ROMs to choose from, China Stable ROM, China Developer ROM, Global Stable ROM and EU custom ROMs ( which are still based on China stable/developer ROM, with some bloatware removal, minor cosmetic changes, better English translation and additional languages).

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 - Great build budget phone

My next budget phone has just arrived, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with 2GB RAM/16GB ROM. The look and build quality is great, not what you would expect from a budget smartphone. Here's my short and simple unboxing.

Redmi Note 4 lower spec version comes with a slower charger. I'm quite disappointed with this. The faster charger has 5V-2A.

*Update ( 15/12/2016 ). There were previously only two variants of the Redmi Note 4, the 2GB RAM/16GB ROM, and 3GB/64GB variant. Xiaomi has released another variant 3GB/32GB. The 2GB RAM version is probably discontinued.
